4. Discussion

Key findings

The cardboard and wood is the most soundproof material

Explanation of key findings

The wood has minimal holes allowing lesser air to pass through and more air to reflect of making it lose most of its energy, making it one of the most soundproof material. Cardboard has the ability to reflect sound rather effectively. Since cardboard can have a relatively smooth surface compared to other materials, it's known to reflect sound.

Evaluation of Hypothesis

We thought the styrofoam had more holes than the other materials, therefore, we assumed that the air would vibrate more before travelling to the other side of the styrofoam, toward the decibel sensor, the sound would be decreased. However, styrofoam ended up being the 5th most soundproof material out of 7 variables.

 Limitations and Areas for improvement

The thickness of material and availability of materials. The surrounding noise was also uneven. Our decibel sensor was also not calibrated and needed to be calibrated manually.
